It’s been a little over a month since New Years Eve. You have gone to the gym, you hurt, you are hungry and you desperately need a glass of wine. You are not willing to break your resolution, not yet anyway…
There are options for you to drink within your “goal weight diet plan, counting calories” whatever that thing is called.
Not to confuse you too much, I’ll give you 5 options to choose from.
First things first. Wine tends to come in different sweetness levels from bone dry to (very) sweet. The words dry/brut/Trocken, semi-sweet and what not actually do serve a purpose. They tell you the approximate amount of residual sugar in the wine. Residual sugar is the sugar still left in the wine after fermentation has finished. That’s why sweet doesn’t have to mean fruity.
Here’s what you can expect from most wines:
Bone-Dry <1 sugar calories per 150ml glass
Dry 0-6 sugar calories per 150ml glass
Off-Dry 6–21 sugar calories per 150ml glass
Sweet 21–72 sugar calories 150ml per glass
Very Sweet 72–130 sugar calories 150ml per glass

- Brut nature/zero dosage sparkling wine
Up to 3g/l
Cava and Cremants are a great option, but Prosecco, Sekt and others work as well. Wines differ in character so go with what you prefer.
Brut natur Cavas tend to be dry, masculine with a steady stream of bubbles and great acidity. Notes of quince, lime, yellow apple, chamomile, almonds and marzipan. Perfect as an aperitif, BBQ or fried foods.
Brut sparkling wines are nice option as well with up to -12g/l of residual sugar
Some wineries list sugar content on the bottle, that will make it easier for you to navigate. As an example Mistinguette Cava Brut Nature contains 1,3g/l residual sugar, opposed to regular Brut version with 11,5g/l
2) Pinot Grigio Up to 10g/l
One of the most popular Italian white wines. Pinot Grigio is usually made in stainless steel tanks.Wines are bright and crisp with good acidity. Notes of lemon, white peach, lime zest, green apple, gravel, salt and mineral. Great companions as is or to pair with white meat, cured pork or risotto
3) Chardonnay Up to 10g/l
This world famous white wine is also known as Chablis, Morillon, Bourgogne Blanc. It is grown all over the globe. Is easy to manipulate, therefor shows winemakers signature.
Wines are showcasing terroir and are very versatile. Typically mineral, medium acidity and low aromatics. Notes of yellow or green apple, starfruit, pineapple, citrus, olives and minerals. Wines go well with Creamy and buttery dishes or Roasted pork
4) Pinot Noir Up to 10g/l
One of the most loved red varieties in the world. Although it’s one of the hardest grapes to grow it’s still widely planted wherever climatic conditions allow.Wines have higher acidity and well balanced alcohol content. Spicy character with explosion of red fruits, pomegranate, red plums, cranberries, cherries, all spice, vanilla, earthy notes, floral and black tea. Work wonders with fruit based sauces, mushrooms, meat stews and of course classic duck breast
5) Syrah Up to 10g/l
Popular grape all over the world. Some of the best ones come from Northern Rhone in France.Wines are complex with good ageing potential, medium bodied with powerful tannins and low to medium acidity. Notes of plum, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, black pepper, tobacco, bacon fat, smoked bell peppers, game, spices, graphite and milk chocolate. Amazing with grilled or BBQ steak, cold cuts and spicy sauces
